Chapter 4 - Controlling Aluminum Ingestion

“The positive relationship between aluminum in drinking-water and Alzheimer’s disease … cannot be totally dismissed.”  World Health Organization 1998 and 2003
“…the MWRA does not routinely analyze for aluminum as it is not on our list of toxic metals.”
F. Laskey – Executive Director Massachusetts Water Resources Authority - 2013
Aluminum as an ionic salt is a neurotoxin that is a causative factor in Alzheimer’s, autism, and stroke.  Aluminum is also the third most common element in the earth’s crust and it is one of the most remarkable elements in the periodic table.  Things made from aluminum metal are strong, light-weight, durable, and electrically conductive. Aluminum’s melting point is low enough that it can be readily recycled.   As a consequence of its availability and unique properties, aluminum, as an ionic salt and a metal, is found in a variety of things that add to our body’s accumulation (i.e. body-burden) of aluminum as estimated in the following table:

The percentages of aluminum ion absorbed into systemic circulation (i.e. bioavailable aluminum) are averages.  Among individuals there is at least a 3 fold variation in these percentages of aluminum bioavailablity51. The data in the table shows that chronic use of aluminum containing pharmaceuticals and aluminum cookware can be the largest sources of bioavailable aluminum. The largest acute source of bioavailable aluminum is from the adjuvant in vaccines.
